Meat and fish
Meat and fish should be stored below 5ºC. In most fridges, the air is colder at the bottom, so we recommend storing meat and fish there.
Fruits and vegetables
Some fruits and vegetables are best kept in your fridge, some on your countertop and others in your pantry. Here are our recommendations of what to store where:
Fruits and vegetables to store in the fridge:
- Apples
- Asparagus
- Baby bok choy
- Baby greens (kale, arugula, spinach)
- Broccoli
- Carrots
- Cauliflower/Cauliflower rice
- Celery
- Chinese broccoli
- Citrus
- Cucumbers
- Cut fruits and vegetables
- Eggplants
- Fresh corn
- Ginger
- Green beans
- Hearty greens (Tuscan kale, radicchio, curly kale, Swiss chard)
- Herbs
- Mushrooms
- Peppers
- Salads and leafy greens
- Scallions
- Snap and snow peas
- Soft fruits (grapes, kiwis)
- Zucchini
You should set your fridge to 5ºC or below, store vegetables separately from fruits, and chilled herbs should be kept in their packaging and placed in the crisper. We recommend storing all herbs in the fridge, except basil. Make sure your herbs are not too close to the cooling unit, which will make them wilt.
Fruits and vegetables to store on your countertop and fridge:
- Mangoes
- Pears
- Stone fruits (peaches, plums, nectarines)
- Tomatoes
Set on the countertop to ripen, then when ripe, store in your fridge. Separate ripe from unripe fruits.
Fruits and vegetables to store on your countertop and pantry:
- Garlic
- Onions
- Potatoes
- Shallots
Separate potatoes from onions and shallots and store them in a cool, dry place with little to no light. You can store potatoes next to apples to avoid sprouting and keep garlic on your countertop away from moisture, heat and direct sunlight.
Avocados
Avocados are one of the most difficult ingredients for us to send due to their short shelf life. Unfortunately, we need to send avocados underripe to prevent them from being overripe when they reach you. Here are some tips to get them ready to be eaten:
- Store avocados at room temperature in a fruit bowl until they reach the preferred ripeness for eating
- Place unripe avocados in a brown paper bag with an apple or banana for 2-3 days until they are ripe
Refrigerating a whole, ripe avocado will maintain the optimum ripeness for 2-3 days until you are ready to use it.
Quick Tips
Ripe tomatoes are most flavourful when enjoyed at room temperature.
Mushrooms are highly absorbent. This is why they should be wiped clean rather than being rinsed.
Separate potatoes and onions during storage because they spoil faster when side by side.
Your vegetables will stay fresh for a minimum of 4 days after delivery. If stored properly upon delivery, all ingredients should last to the end of your best before dates.
